Throughout the story, we see that the Bishop has a very friendly attitude towards the convict even though the latter tries to threaten him and even steal his beloved candlesticks. This behaviour of the Bishop clearly justifies the maxim 'hate the sin, not the sinner'. This is because the Bishop not only acts friendly towards the convict, but also tries to change the convict from a wild beast back to a normal human being. Even though the convict has done many bad things, the Bishop, to the amusement of his sister, acts like a friend and even saves him from the police. Instead, he tries to work over the convict's mind and change his thoughts , that is, to convert a devil into human by just hating what he has done and not him.

Hope it helps!!!!!!
