yes it is applied in magnification formula for mirror that is convex or concave.

bt if applied then formula will be v÷u because u is always negative
and -v and -u - will be cancelled
ya bt suppose v is 10 and u is 5 then m will be -10 ÷-5 =2 then magnification will be positive
in formula - u can be applied or not
