American Indians are Native Americans.

They are Indigenous Americans and in another way, they are the indigenous peoples of the U.S.A., except the Island of  Hawaii.

There are over 500 federation oriented tribes within the US.

About fifty percent are associated with Indian reservations category.

The term "American Indian" excludes Native Hawaiians and also some specific Alaska Natives, while Native Americans specified by the US Census are American Indians, plus the natives of  Alaska.
