Things Fall Apart is placed in Umuofia, a small fictional village in Nigeria. It is set in 1890 which was the beginning of the era of colonization. The novel revolves around Okonkwo, the tragic protagonist. Okonkwo is a self-made, well-respected man of his village. He rises as an important leader of his community and is seen as the ‘protector’ of the Village.
On the mournful occasion of Ezeudu’s funeral, Okonkwo’s gun accidentally goes off and kills Ezeudu’s son. as a result of this sin, Okwonko, along with his family is ostracized from the village and sent to exile for seven years. While Okonkwo is outside the village, ‘the white man along with Christian missionaries enters the village of Umuofia and begins to establish a new form of administration and a new religion. The white men start preaching Christianity. By the time Okwonko completes his exile and returns to Umuofia, Reverend Smith, a snobbish white man takes over the village governance. His attitude towards the people of Umuofia provokes the common people into burning a church constructed by the colonizers. This infuriates the authorities and some locals are put in prison. The villagers gather for a meeting to retaliate against the Britishers which is interrupted by a messenger of the British. Okonkwo, to defend his ‘protector of the Village' title and assert dominance, kills the messenger. he kills an innocent white man. He had expected the villagers to stand by him for killing one of the colonizers but people condemn him. Okwonko perishes in his attempt to resist the wide-ranging changes introduced by colonial rule. The thought of being punished by someone whom he had intended to oust becomes too much for Okonkwo to bear. He commits suicide by hanging himself by a tree in the middle of the Village. No one from the village touches his body because anyone who committed suicide was considered to be an abomination by the villagers. Ironically, the same people that Okwonko was trying to throw out are the ones who take down his body.
The character of Okonkwo exhibits radical orthodoxy and tries to retain tradition by opposing any changes that were being brought by the Britishers. His attempt to oppose the alien culture and take matters into his own hands took everything away from him at last.
