For instance there are some lines in the original excerpt which explains the theme that the man projects his own fears on nature whilst the nature tends to remain indifferent.

1- "At these times they were uncanny and sinister in their unblinking scrutiny, and the men hooted angrily at them, telling them to be gone."

The birds are staring at the men, and yet the men feel as if they are "uncanny", and "sinister". These men seem to be projecting their own fears on indifferent birds.

2- The theme can be explained from these lines, "After it had been discouraged from the pursuit the captain breathed easier on account of his hair, and others breathed easier because the bird struck their minds at this time as being somehow grewsome and ominous."

These lines showcase that birds strike the men as being "grewsome and ominous."

These men see the birds as foreshadowing some sort of evil. Once again this depicts that the men are projecting their own fears onto the birds. Generally,  whereas the birds that do not care about them one way or another.
