In the story, Douglass was being humiliated because when his master died and did not write a will they needed to figure out how much he is worth “I was immediately sent for, to be valued with the other property” (1) so they can split it up with the master's son and daughter. Therefore, to do this “ [they] were all ranked together at the valuation. Men and women, old and young, married and single, were ranked with horses, sheep, and swine.” (2) Slaves were being priced compared to animals, this was because people often saw them as animals.
