In the poem friends and flatterers, the narrator explains that people are attracted towards us when we are rich and famous and leave us when our wealth is gone, and we are in a miserable condition.

Most people come only due to attraction towards our wealth but a true friend seeks no wealth from us. He always stands by us in our happiness and sadness and always helps us.He makes us progress towards being a better human being.

Thus, flatterers do get benefit from us, leading to our loss.
