In the poem, The Gift, the poetess Alice Walker was gifted with her lover’s soul. She did not believe that his love for her was real, but a possessive feeling.  However, being a Southerner, she appreciated the gift and took good care of it.

However, after some time, he wants his soul back. She replies and says that his soul was always with him. His soul represented only his thoughts and not his actual feelings. The thoughts usually arise in the mind of a person and the feelings arise in his heart.

So she compared his soul to his thoughts, since he never loved her.
