In the poem "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" the poet Maya Angelou lays down the sufferings and hardships which the African American had to undergo. She makes a distinction between the caged bird and the free bird. She says that the time when the free bird flies in the open air, at the same time the caged bird sings the songs of the freedom. The free bird here represents the Whites who are free in the world while the caged birds are the Blacks who are the victim of racial discrimination. The free bird can enjoy all the happiness and freedom, while the caged bird has to live the life of a slave. The wings of the birds have been cut down so that it cannot have the right to fly anytime in the future too. In the same way, the African American is deprived of the basic fundamental rights. The songs of the caged bird are only the way by which it can sing about its grievances. Blacks have only one way to express their feelings and that is through literature. Literature in the form of poems and songs gives a way to blacks to bring out their problems and sufferings before the people.
