The poet in poem Snake he has something to expiate because he hit the snake with a log while the snake came to drink water peacefully at his trough. He regrets his act and wants to make amends.

nReal313: Actually, the question should have 'expiate' and not 'expatiate'. These two words have entirely different meanings.
arushibansal: true. thankyou for pointing it out.
14yashjangidp4fvlr: But in question it was written expatiate
arushibansal: but in the context of the poem it should be expiate.
