Here is your answer.

The poem ‘Television’ is a famous poem of Roald Dahl that advises and inspires to read books instead of watching the television.

Here the poet shows the contrast between children of today and children of past by stating that earlier in past time when poet himself was a child there wasn't any technology of television which he demonize as 'monster'. The children in past used to spend their time by reading books of fairies, stories and general knowledge .In those earlier days the nursery selves were full of books. In nursery schools, books remained scattered on the floor. Even in their home, the bedroom and the bed – books cluttered up everywhere. Reading books make the imagination power of children strong and their brain active. He also give many examples of books which the children used to read in past.

Comparing this , poet says that now a days children are seen watching television in way as they are hypnotized by it. Today, children show no interest in reading books. When the children are before a television set, they ‘sit and stare and stare and sit’ for long hours. They don’t seem to be moving from there, as they probably forget everything around them in the real world. Rather, the one they watch on the television becomes real for the time being. This lowers their efficiency of imagination and they become dull. Continuous gazing at television screen leads eye visibility problems also.

So, in the nutshell the poet wants to tell the parents of the present generation and the children to avoid watching television too much and instead read books which is far more better option.
