forlorn group in the poem Cold Within refers to the sad group of 6 people who lacked the warm and compassion in them and didn't used the log of wood which all had with them.
and finally all died not due to the cold outside but due to the cold inside.

The phrase 'forlorn group' consists of two ideas contradicting each other. Forlorn means lonely and group means a collection of something. In other words group symbolises togetherness. So we can say these phrase highlights a contradiction. Actually with the use of these phrase, the poet wants to describe the lack of unity, fellowfeeling and brotherhood. The six persons were sitting around a dying fire with a log in their hands but were reluctant to use the wood to feel the fire and help others due to several discrimination. The selfishness of the act of not helping others made them lonely though they were in a group. Thus the poet refers the group of six persons a forlorn group.
