Upward displacement of air is good for gases that are heavier/denser than air, and are soluble in water. 
Examples are carbon dioxide, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide and chlorine. 
As a general guide, a gas is less dense than air if its molecular mass is less than 30, so you should be looking at gases with Mr more than 30! :)
