Given info : In the presence of excess of anhydrous SrCl₂, The amount of water taken up is governed by Kp = 10¹² atm for the following reaction at 273 K,

SrCl₂.2H₂O (s) + 4H₂O (g) ⇒ SrCl₂.6HO (s)

To find : the equilibrium vapor pressure in torr of water in a closed vessel that contains SrCl₂.2H₂O.

solution : At equilibrium,

Kp = 1/(PH₂O)⁴

⇒10¹² = 1/(PH₂O)⁴

⇒(PH₂O) = 10¯³ atm

We know, 1 atm = 760 torr

Therefore, pressure of water in the vessel is 10¯³ × 760 torr = 0.76 torr.
