It is called the Discriminant, because it can "discriminate" between the possible types of answer: when b2 − 4ac is positive, we get two Real solutions.

The expression

 {b}^{2}  - 4ac

is a factor which is used in quadratic equation to get the values except the value of x

For example :-

 {x}^{2}  + px + 4

we know,

 {ax}^{2}  +  {b}^{2}  + c = 0

where,

a = 1

b = p

c = 4

 {b}^{2}  - 4ac = 0

 {p}^{2}  - 4.1.4 = 0

 {p}^{2}  = 16 \\ p =  \sqrt{16} \\p = 4
