The oxidising agent is the molecule which undergoes reduction and oxidises other molecule.
in the above reaction br2 is oxidising agent
since it accept electrons( which means reduction) and oxidises iodine

Bromine is an oxidising agent.

  • The reaction is-
  • Br_2+2I^-\rightarrow 2Br^-+I_2
  • The species which themselves get reduced and help another species in oxidation is called an oxidizing agent.
  • The oxidation state of iodide changes to -1 from 0. Thus this species is oxidized.
  • The oxidation state of Br changes from 0 to -1. Thus it gets reduced and act as an oxidising agent.
