In the given reaction, the term Y is (c) acetaldehyde.

• CH₃CN + 2H + HCl → CH3-CH=NH

1 mole of ethane nitrile reacts with 2 atoms of hydrogen in the presence of hydrochloric acid to get reduced to 1 mole of ethanamine.

Therefore, compound X is ethanamine (C₂H₅N).

• CH₃-CH=NH + H₂O/Boiling → CH₃CHO (Y) + NH₃

1 mole of ethanamine boils in water to produce 1 mole of acetaldehyde along with the evolution of ammonia gas.

Therefore, compound Y is acetaldehyde (CH₃CHO).
