H2O2 converts black lead sulphide to white lead sulphate
PbS+4H2O2----> PbSO4+4H2O
here PbS oxidises and H2O2 reduces

The substance oxidized is PbS and the substance reduced is H2O2 due to the following:

- The substance is said to be oxidised if there is an addition of oxygen whereas the substances at to be reduced if there is removal of the oxygen.

- The balance equation of the lead sulphide and hydrogen peroxide is represented below:

PbS + 4H2O2 ---> PbSO4 + 4H2O

- It is clearly seen from the equation that in PbS the oxidation state of Pb is + 2 and S is -2 whereas in PbSO4 the oxidation state of Pb is + 2 and S is +6 .

- On the other hand, In 4H2O2 the oxidation state of H is + 1 and O is -1 and in H2O the oxidation state of H is +1 and O is -2.

- As, In the reactant side Pb oxidation State decreases from - 2 to + 6 in product side. So, it is a reducing agent means it is being oxidized so PbS is oxidising substance.

- On the other side in the reactant side oxide oxidation state is increased from - 1 to -2 in product side. So, it undergoes reduction reaction means it is been reduced. Thus, H2O2 is reducing substance.
