The order of the reaction is 3.

Given:  50% of the reaction was completed in 108 seconds when initial pressure was 336 mm Hg and in 147 seconds initial pressure was 288 mm Hg.

To Find: The order of the reaction.

Solution:

The question can be solved using the formula for half reaction,

t ∝ ( P )^(1-n)     [ where t = time taken, P = pressure achieved, n = order ]

According to the given information,

t1 = 108 s , t2 = 147 s, P1 = 336 mm Hg , P2 = 288 mm Hg.

Thus,

           ( t1 / t2 ) = ( P1 / P2 )^(1-n)

       ⇒ ( 108 / 147 ) = ( 336 / 288 )^(1-n)

       ⇒ ( 36 / 49 ) = ( 7 / 6 )^(1-n)

       ⇒ ( 7 / 6 )^-2 =  ( 7 / 6 )^(1-n)

Now, since bases are the same, so we can directly compare the powers,

       ∴  1 - n = -2

        ⇒ n = 3

Hence, the order of the reaction is 3.
