Number of attempts required is 16 attempts and he will get gift as explained.

To find:

His gift and the minimum number of attempts required

Given:

17 lockers in a row

Solution:

There are 17 lockers in a row. Hence, there are 16 chances that he will get gift inside the locker and the number of attempts required will be 16 attempts as it is given that the gift will automatically move to the adjacent locker and after the 16th attempt, he will definitely get the gift in the 17th locker if he does not get gift in all previous attempts.

Hence, number of attempts required is 16 attempts and he will get gift.
