The arid zone of India covers about 12% of the country's geographical area. A total of 32 million ha is hot arid and is spread over parts of Rajasthan (61%), Gujarat (20%), Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka (10%), and Punjab and Haryana (9%). The remaining 7 million ha is a cold arid zone situated in the Ladhakh area of Jammu and Kashmir and the Lahul Spiti area of Himachal Pradesh. The hot arid zone lying west of Rajasthan occupies the largest area (20 million ha) of the arid ecosystem of the country, and is popularly known as Thar desert.
