It's was true because when he put the touch light on the boy face so he seems that the boy has no eye, no mouth nthg it was seems like a blank face too see that Mr Oliver got afraid and he started calling help and help and ran away towards the school

Later when he went in the school her watchman ask him why are u running then he told that he saw a boy who had no face, no eye etc..

Than the watchman put that lamp near to his face and ask did it like that than the winds come and blew the lamp then the watchmen his no eyes no face nothg

Hey babe !! Here's ur answer

There were four possible reasons that made mr. Oliver see the boy faceless . two of which u already gave :

Maybe something supernatural might have happened with mr. Oliver .

Or it was his imagination as he was lonely all the time and his loneliness forced him to imagine all this . Or maybe some mischievous boy of the school hostel might have pranked him . Or he was so not satisfied with his teaching or he doesnot see himself as a good teacher , he might have thought that he had not taught his children well and that is why they became faceless ( not having a good future ) ...

My teacher told me the last reason so i think it must be true.
