In the story angle in disguise the writer targets the selfishness of the people like Mrs Ellis who took Kate so that Ellis could be helped by her household work but the person who took Maggie was kind he loves kids as he didn't have any.
Also the writer tell that Maggie's mom was a sponge (drunken ) hated by almost everyone in the village and after her death every one thought regretful of her life they thought pity for her
