Salvatore is the main protagonist of the story 'Salvatore'. He is a carefree 15 year old Italian boy who lives in the Grand Marina in South Italy. He have a girlfriend with whom he is engaged but they can't marry until Salvatore had done his military service. It was heartbreaking for him to leave his beloved family, island and fiancee.
For Salvatore who had enjoyed infinite freedom it was now a drastic twist in his life. He had become a sailor in the navy of King Victor Emmanuel. The doctors diagnose him with rheumatism and send him home. On welcomed by his parents and brothers with cry of joy, Salvatore was looking for his girl in the crowd but in vain. She was not there.
When he went to her home, she was sitting there with her mother at the doorstep. They had already received the news of his illness and learned that 'he would never be quite well again'. The girl avoided him like a plague. Her mother bluntly told him that her daughter could not marry him now as he would never be able to work like a man. This was a heartbreaking for Salvatore but he did not blame the girl. One day Salvatore's mother told him about a girl named Assunta who fell in love with him at a festival and wanted to marry him. Though at first he refused but later they both get married. Later they had two boys and settled in the middle of a vineyard. they had a hard life but one full of love and satisfaction.
