The crop yield per hectare in India was too low previously. But with the increasing demand and food deficit, the country has given special attention to the production of chemical fertilisers.
As a result, there has been a rapid growth of chemical fertiliser industry in India during last five decades and now India is the third largest producer of nitrogenous fertilisers in the world. India’s average annual production of nitrogenous fertiliser is 12 million tons and phosphatic fertiliser is 4.5 million tons.
The Government of India has established a number of industries of national importance. The fertiliser industry is one of them. The Fertiliser Corporation of India is a public sector company, which is the most important fertiliser producer company of India. In India, about 60 factories are actually producing chemical fertilisers in different parts of the country along with about 70 medium and small-scale units.
As a part of agricultural development programme, a large-scale factory of Fertiliser Corporation of India has been started at Sindri (Bihar). The factory produces mostly ammonium sulphate and to a lesser extent urea and ammonium nitrate. It has a daily capacity of 1000 tons.
