Though the narrator was blind, he was a sharp observer. When the girl walked in the compartment at Rohana, he could easily guess that she was wearing slippers from the sound of the slapping of it against her heels. When the engine's whistle shrieked and the carriage wheels changed their sound and rhythm, he knew the train will soon come to a halt. The perfume from her hair tantalized him. He could guess easily that the high pitched voice near the carriage door was the girl's aunt.
