In the text, when Anna Vasilyevna and Savushkin enter the forest, the writer tells us that the trees
'stepped aside' allowing the two to see the meadows and walk through them.

1. Look for any three examples of personification in the text. What qualities has the writer given
them to make them come alive? Which example of personification did you like most and why?

2. Read your examples and then say why you think the writer has chosen to personify these things
You can choose more than one answer and add your own-
a. to make the writing more vivid and imaginative
b. to help the reader understand and remember a theme or idea
c. to help the reader see a theme/idea differently
d. to add emotion to the text

The frost froze the fingers of each tree. Trees do not have fingers.

The sun rose and lit the light for the day. The sun has no hands and so can not switch on a light.
