Timothy Boon by Ivy O. Eastwick

Explanation:

The poem is as below: -

Timothy Boon

Bought a balloon

Blue as the sky,

Round as the moon.

“Now I will try

To make it fly

Up to the moon,

Higher than high!”

Timothy said,

Nodding his head.

Timothy Boon

Sent his balloon

Up through the skies,

Up to the moon.

But a strong breeze

Stirred in the trees

Rocked the bright moon,

Tossed the great seas,

And, with its mirth,

Shook the whole earth.

Timothy Boon,

And his balloon,

Caught by the breeze

Flew to the moon;

Up past the trees,

Over the seas,

Up to the moon—

Swift as you please!—

And, oh, I forget,

They have not come down yet!

  • Ans 1)The poem is about the 'larger than life' world that a child sees. Timothy Boon is fond of balloons, so he buys a balloon that is blue as the sky and round like the moon. He wishes for his balloon to reach as high as the moon in the sky.
  • Ans 2) He is able to make his balloon reach the moon but then suddenly there is a strong breeze that stirs the trees, rocks the moon and tosses the great seas. The 'breeze' is so strong that the entire Earth is shook. As a result Timothy is blown away with his blue balloon up to the sky, over the seas and till the moon. In the end the poet says that Timothy and the balloon haven't come back and that they are still up on the moon.
  • The poet wants to depicts how even small things like balloon, breeze etc appear big to a child. In other words, the poem talks about the innocence of the child and carefree nature of childhood. Children live in their fantasy world of fairies and fairy tales. They find happiness in simple pleasures of life, like buying of a balloon.
