In the vastness of space, if supernovas and other explosions happen often, why can't we simply look up and see them?

First of all, stars has a life of millions of years. So, supernova explosion is not so often as you are thinking. However, some stars are really far away. And it's impossible to see their explosions with naked eyes due to this reason. Some stars are closer and their explosion can be observed from earth but they are not that frequent as said before. For example nova delphinus 2013 was observed through naked eyes from various places on earth.
