In "The Yellow Wallpaper," which description of the narrator’s room best indicates that it probably was not a nursery in the past?
1) It is a big, airy room . . . with windows that look all ways, and air and sunshine galore.
2)The furniture in this room is no worse than inharmonious, however, for we had to bring it all from downstairs.
3)There is a very funny mark on this wall, low down, near the mopboard.
4)The windows are barred . . . and there are rings and things in the walls.

The answer is 4. The windows are barred..and there are rings and things in the walls.

The Yellow wallpaper is a short story written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.

Explantion

Option 1: A nursery is usually big and airy with windows to allow more ventilation.

Option 2:The furniture present in the room, is not mentioned here, but the furniture in a nursery usually consists of cribs and chairs.

Option 3:There are usually funny marks on the walls of a nursery, which are made by children, by their drawing.

Option 4:The windows of a nursery need not be barred nor the need for things in the walls because the younger children could not reach these. So it suggests the room had been used for some other purpose, after it was a nursery.

In text ‘The Yellow Wallpaper, written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman the  description of the narrator’s room best describes  that it probably it  was not a nursery in earlier days: 4) Presence of barred windows, and provision of rings and things hanging on the walls.

English Dictionary describes ‘nursery’ as a place where young children and babies are kept and cared for when their parents are other places for personal or official purpose.

Nursery rooms must be big and airy.

Rooms are airy with lots of windows.

Plenty of air and sunshine enters the nursery rooms and make it healthy.

It is decorated with sparse furniture comprising mostly of cribs, and dining tables.

It also has funny marks on the lower portions of the room walls made by children while practicing their drawing.

However, the presence of rings and things in the walls indicates that it was earlier probably a room for older children or used for a different purpose other than that of a nursery.
