Answer and explanation:-  The author and Thelma Rae were best friends because they liked each other's company. Before the author got married and moved away, she and Thelma spent a lot of time together, because Thelma was in fact, the author's mother. They were both passionate about the same things in life like writing, spending the afternoons at the beach, relishing the Chinese cuisine and soft, calming music. Also, despite the age difference between the daughter and mother, Thelma was always full of energy and a good sport. For instance, she was more than willing to have fun with her daughter, just as best friends do. This is why, it not surprising that the author considered Thelma to be her best friend.
