in thermometer mercury is used because it doesn't stick to the walls of the thermometer it doesn't expand much with increase in temperature

The liquid used in thermometers has moderate coefficient of expansion so as to measure body temperature where as solids have very low and gases have very high coefficient of expansion. ... Mercury is the only one in liquid state at room temperature. It's used in thermometers because it has high coefficient of expansion.
