First we will take out the area of the rectangle MNOP,

                l*b

                12*15

               180 cm^2

Now we will take out the area of all the triangles,

Triangle MND,  

      MN=12 cm    

       MD=15-9=6 cm

      Area= 1/2*b*h

                =0.5*12*6=36 cm^2

Triangle ENO,

                   NO=15 cm

                    EO=12/2=6cm

                      Area=1/2*b*h

                              =0.5*6*15=45 cm^2

Triangle DPE,

                    DP=9 cm

                     PE=12/2=6 cm

                      Area=1/2*b*h

                           =0.5*6*9=27 cm^2

Area of shaded portion,

              Area of rectangle-Area of the three triangles

                180-27-45-36=72 cm^2
