The three-domain system which is a biological classification was introduced by Carl Woese in 1977.
This system divides cellular life forms into three major domains namely archaea, bacteria, and eukaryote domains.
In particular, this system emphasizes on the separation of prokaryotes into two major groups, originally called Eubacteria (now Bacteria) and Archaebacteria (now Archaea).
These domains were further divided into kingdoms. The three domain theory has been challenged by certain scientists.
