Let the no. of students in old class be x.
1.25 of x=55
So,x=55/1.25
      x=55×(100/125)
      x=55×4/5
      x=44

There were 44 students in the old class.

let the students in old class =x

so , students in current class = 1.25 × x = 55
( if we remove . point ). = 125/100× x= 55
=x= 55×100 /125
=11×4=44
hope it will help
