Answer

A number of chromosomes in the female is 24 and zygote is 48.

Explanation

In a tobacco plant, the male gamete has 24 chromosomes. We know that when a male gamete and female gamete fuse together then zygote formation takes place by the process of fertilization.

In human beings, 46 chromosomes are present having a set of 23 chromosomes and one pair of sex chromosome which helps of determination of sex. Same in tobacco plant 48 chromosomes are present according to question. 48 chromosomes in male plant and female plant are present. But half of them i.e. 24 from female plant and 24 from the male plant, will pass to next progeny.

When the gametes of both parents/plants fuse together containing 24-24 chromosomes then zygote with 48 (24+24) chromosomes are formed.

Hence, a number of chromosomes in female tobacco plant are 24 chromosomes which are same as that of the male tobacco plant. And in the zygote, we get the sum of both of their chromosomes i.e. 24 chromosomes.

Sex Determination in human beings

Human beings contain 46 chromosomes, having 23 pairs of chromosomes and 22 pair of chromosomes are exactly the same in number (known as autosomes).

In female X-X chromosomes are present whereas in male X-Y chromosomes are present.

During spermatogenesis 50% of sperm carry X chromosome and 50% carry Y chromosome.

During fertilization, if sperm carrying X chromosome fuse with egg then female offspring will form. But if sperm with Y chromosome fuse with egg then male offspring formation takes place.

Therefore, formation of either male offspring or female offspring depends only on male sperm that which type of chromosome it is carrying.
