You know as well,
\quad\textbf{sum of two sides of any triangle must be}\\\textbf{greater than third side and difference of}\\\textbf{two sides must be less than third sides}

it is given that, in triangle ABC,
AB = 5 , AC = 7

so, BC > (AB + AC)

or, BC > 5 + 7 = 12

or, BC > 12

again, BC < AC - AB

or, BC < 7 - 5 = 2

or, BC < 2

hence, 12 < BC < 2 compare with x < BC < y

x = 12 and y = 2
