Solution:

Given: ∠ADE = ∠B,

AD = 3.8 cm, AE = 3.6 cm, BE = 2.1 cm and BC = 4.2 cm

Proof:

In ΔADE ~ ΔABC,

∠A = ∠A (Common)

∠ADE = ∠B (Given)

Therefore, ΔADE ~ ΔABC (AA Criterion)

⇒ AD/AB=DE/BC

⇒ 3.8/(3.6+2.1)=DE/4.2

⇒ 3.8/5.7=DE/4.2

DE = 3.8×4.25.7=2.8

Hence, DE = 2.8 cm
