If DE || BC,

By using basic proportionality theorem :-

$\frac{AD}{DB} = \frac{ AE}{CE}$

$\frac{x}{x + 1} = \frac{x + 3}{x + 5}$

By cross multiplying

$x(x + 5) = (x + 1)(x + 3) \\ x {}^{2} + 5x = x {}^{2} + 3x + x + 3 \\ x {}^{2} + 5x = x {}^{2} + 4x + 3 \\ 5x - 4x = 3 \\ x = 3$

x = 3 is the answer
