As DE || BC so ratio of sides will be equal

So, AD:DB = AE:EC

AD / DB = AE / EC

$\frac{x}{x + 1} = \frac{x + 3}{x + 5}$

$x(x + 5) = x + 3(x + 1)$

${x}^{2} + 5x = {x}^{2} + x + 3x + 3$

${x}^{2} - {x}^{2} + 5x - 3x -x = 3$

$x = 3$
