Kanauj was an important city in North India. It was located in the upper Gangetic valley. Any dynasty having control over this area also had access to the rich natural resources and fertile land of the entire Ganga valley. So the palas , the Gurjara Pratiharas and the Rashtrakutas wanted to control over kanauj.
