In two letter symbols the first letter is always written in Capital and the second letter is always small.

For example :

  • Carbon monoxide = Co
  • Chlorine = Cl
  • Magnesium = Mg
  • Helium = He
  • Calcium = Ca
  • Lithium = Li
  • Zinc = Zn
  • Iron (Ferrous) = Fe
  • Copper = Cu
  • Gold = Au
  • Silver = Ag

So the answer is :

[(b) capital , small]

How are/were elements named ?

  • Elements in olden days were named after their distinctive colour
  • The place they were found
  • Nowadays they are named by IUPAC i.e International of Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.
  • Elements are formed when identical atoms come together and form bonds.
  • Compounds are formed when elements form bonds.
  • Atom is the smallest particle. It is made up of protons , electrons and neutrons .
  • Protons are positively charged and neutrons are neutral which electrons are negatively charged. The number of protons is equal to number of neutrons . Hence an atom has neutral value.

Answer:

  • In two letter symbols the first letter is always written in capital and the second letter is always small.

Additional explanation:

  • In two letter symbol for any thing always the first one would be capital and the next would be small.

  • As the question is asked in the subject Chemistry, let me give examples by using periodic table element symbols.

Example:

  1. Aluminum => AI
  2. Gold => Au
  3. Iron => Fe
  4. Neon = Ne
  5. Tin = Sn

Know more:

  • See, you can find that the symbols of elements in Periodic table has the first letter at Capital and the next second letter is Small.

  • For some elements there's only one letter as it's the first letter it is always Capital and for few other there are three symbol but the first letter stands the Capital and other two stands with the Small.

Example:

  1. Boron => B
  2. Carbon => C
  3. Fluorine => F
  4. Hydrogen => H
  5. Ununbium => Uub

Hence, Option (B) - Capital, Small is the Required Answer.
