Root cells and leaf cells have different physical attributes and perform different functions and hence are different.

Differences between root cells and leaf cells

  • Root cells have an elongated shape whereas leaf cells have a rectangular shape.
  • The main function of the leaf cells is the process of photosynthesis. Whereas the function of the root cells is to draw minerals and water from the soil.
  • Root cells have chloroplast for the process of photosynthesis to occur whereas root cells lack chloroplasts.

What property of multicellular organisms makes this difference  possible?

  • This difference is caused by organisms for translating different proteins and turning on/off a gene for each cell type.
