To hear a sound 3 Things are required a medium, recepter nd a source
We cant use solid as a medium for sound transfer
In such case direct contact is required by the solid body

Well we know that until and unless there is air the medium, the sound cannot travel from the source to the receiver. In this case the astronauts don't use any solid medium in space to transfer sound instead they use the radio's because the radio sound waves are electromagnetic, we also know that the electromagnetic waves don't need any medium to travel therefore radio is used to communicate in space.
