Light travels slower in water that in vacuum, in air for that matter. We measure this by refractive index. Water’s refractive index with respect to air is 4/3 at 20 0C0C . This means, that light travels 4/3 times faster in air than in water.

So basically, when we fill the tank with water and look from above, the image that we would get would be apparent. This is because light travels, as said above, slower in water.

Let us say that the level of water is away from the top of the container by ‘x’ cm. The actual level of water would then be ‘21-x’ cm. Also, the apparent depth would be the same level ‘x’ cm.

How is refractive index defined?

Real DepthApparent Depth=43Real DepthApparent Depth=43

Hence,

21−xx=4321−xx=43

63−3x=4x63−3x=4x

63=7x63=7x

x=9x=9

It is thus clear that the container should be filled upto 21 - 9 = 12 cm height, so that the container appears to be half filled.
