buoyant force acts in an upward direction where as the weight of the object acts in a downward direction.

Explanation:

If the object is heavier then force downward would be more than the buoyant force causing the object to sink.

If the object is lighter then force upward would be more than the force exerted by the object causing the object to float.

If the buoyant force is equal to the force applied by the force of the object then the object will float half immersed in water.
