In what direction is electrorheological fluid weak?

I think I read somewhere that electrorheological fluids are easier to deform in one direction, what direction is it?
If we look at typical scenario with fluid between two electrodes where the solid particles form "strings" between the two electrodes.Which direction is the weak one? Is it parallel to the "strings",that is trying to pull the electrodes apart,or is it perpendicular to the "strings",that would be moving the top electrode left right or front to back on the picture.
Hope this helps you ✌️ ✌️ ✌️....
