When an artificial satellite orbits the earth , it's speed is balanced by the pull of Earth's gravity ..... Without this the satellite would only then move in a straight line .....

artificial satellite, object constructed by humans and placed in orbit around the earth or other celestial body (see also spaceprobe). The satellite is lifted from theearth's surface by a rocket and, once placed in orbit, maintains its motion without further rocket propulsion.
