In "The Raven," how does the speaker's state of mind change as the poem progresses.
The speaker's mood in the poem progresses from melancholy to outright despair. His initial grief appears to be caused by Lenore's death, but by the end of the poem, his unhappiness is caused by the realisation that his grief is eternal.
The speaker is dejected and tired in the first few stanzas. When he hears knocking, he tells himself not to expect anything more than a stranger attempting to gain access to his chamber. The phrases "nothing more" and "nevermore" emphasize the speaker's unending grief: his Lenore will never grace his presence again, and thus his soul will never be lifted from the depths of depression.
As a result, the speaker is depressed at the start of the poem. He does, however, harbor a glimmer of hope in the depths of his psyche. He imagines that there is an afterlife where he will be reunited with his love. He even considers asking God to relieve him of his never-ending, torturous grief. However, by the end of the poem, the speaker has accepted his inevitable fate. With a pang, he realises that he will never be free of melancholy and that he is doomed to eternal sorrow.
