In what proportion should milk and water be mixed to reduce the cost of litre of milk from Rs. 18 per litre to Rs. 16? (Assume water does not cost anything)

Use unitary method to find milk volume under required cost

Rs 18 cost for 1 litre milk

we can say,

Rs 18 cost for 1000ml milk

Rs 1 is cost for 1000/18 ml milk

Rs 16 is cost for 1000/18 * 16 ml = 8000/9 ml milk

so for 1 litre or 1000 ml milk

Amount of water added = 1000 - 8000/9 = 1000/9 ml water

Proportion of milk and water =

8000/9 : 1000/9

8 : 1
